Some of the Best Causes Never Get Off the Ground

In my experience, there is no shortage of community-changing ideas. Sadly, many of them never make it past the starting line. Promising causes with passionate leaders, talent-filled boards, and compelling mission statements quietly fizzle.

One personal experience has stayed with me.

Hunter was just two years old when he suffered devastating abuse at the hands of his mother's boyfriend. He survived, but with physical disabilities that would likely last a lifetime.

Reading Hunter's story reminded me of another little York County child, Darisabel, who had been murdered just one year earlier.

At the time, it felt like York County was inundated with cases of child abuse. As I searched for organizations focused on preventing abuse before it ever happened, I discovered something surprising: Pennsylvania didn't have a chapter of Prevent Child Abuse America.

I was invited to help launch one.

I loved the mission. Most resources devoted to child abuse focus on responding after abuse occurs. Very few are dedicated to preventing it in the first place by addressing the culture of parenting and the environments where children grow up.

Everything seemed to be in place. We had respected medical experts, statewide partnerships, incredible supporters, and even major fundraising opportunities. It felt like this organization could become a force for achieving the Unlikely Good of preventing child abuse across Pennsylvania.

Yet today, that chapter no longer exists.

I've often wondered why.

The dream wasn't the problem.

The mission wasn't the problem.

Yet somehow, it never gained the momentum it needed to last.

Looking back, I don't believe this story is unique. I've seen too many worthwhile causes begin with extraordinary promise only to quietly lose traction before they ever fulfill their potential.
